Are Your Health Issues Connected To Your Emotional States?

In the last decade of my Functional Wellness practice, I have often seen clients doing everything right, eating well, exercising, etc., and still not achieving the improvements they need for good health. Almost every single one of these clients has one thing in common: unaddressed emotional wounds and/or trauma in their health history. I have many times attempted to include this dynamic in their wellness journey with me, but only a handful have been actually willing and/or able to explore this further. It is not an easy path to take for most of us; we would rather just follow a protocol or list of instructions to avoid feeling what we have spent years avoiding or repressing.

How do emotional wounds connect to health issues? There are so many avenues of connection, I can only include a few here.

When we experience traumatic or emotionally disturbing states, especially in our childhood, these experiences can get locked into our body, our tissues, if they were not able to be fully digested and experienced due to a lack of safety in the environment at that time.

When that occurs, the emotions and their need for expression do not just “disappear”; they are held in the body and may manifest in later years as a physical constriction and holding, not just in the body itself, but also in the subtler nervous system.

As our hormones, gut microbes, and immune system are all informed by our nervous system state, you can imagine the ramifications of not addressing these stored emotions, especially years down the road. Chronic pain states, mental health issues, digestive issues, and more, can often be related to hidden, suppressed traumas, which is why sometimes addressing these conditions via nutrition and exercise may not be enough.

If you are like many of my clients, and “doing everything right,” but still not fully improving in the ways you desire or feel you should be, try asking yourself if there is anything you are not addressing or avoiding. Does it sometimes feel like there is a "giant foot" keeping you down, preventing you from fully realizing your dreams and intentions? Do you find yourself making excuses for not making the changes you know you need to make to get well? Have you had a challenging childhood and/or adolescence where important needs were not met or where you experienced a violation of your boundaries and/or feeling safe in your body and your expression?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then there is possibly a connection between unaddressed emotional wounds and your symptoms, which are trying to get your attention and manifesting with dysregulation via the body/ mind.

This is where working with a qualified somatic practitioner, experienced with trauma and emotional dysregulation, and who can guide you safely in this exploration, can make a difference. In my own health journey, addressing my suppressed emotions and past traumas has been transformational in my healing. When I was finally able to feel and release my childhood wounds and subsequent self-harm and emotional chaos, my life began to change.

Fortunately, I was also guided to acquire training in somatic trauma coaching, so I can be better equipped to help others. We are in such need in our world right now for emotional healing. We would all benefit if we all "passed it on" for others to benefit as well.

It is my hope that we all find our way "home" again, where we feel safe, nurtured, supported, and at peace in our bodies. I am so passionate about this modality and would be honored to assist you in your own healing journey. Be well.
